European Car Insurance

Car insurance is obviously a must where ever you plan of going. If your insurance is not valid in the country you are driving in than it just a piece of paper. Your documents will be checked if you get pulled over so there is no getting around it. I said to the guy on the phone when I got mine “I just want to get the minimum insurance cover to satisfy my legal obligations” to which he replied, “yeah but you’ll be glad you did if you get hit”. He’s right! Its worth considering things like if you will get a courtesy car abroad. If you’re car is a write of, how does it get transported back to the UK and who’s going to pay for that?

There are a number of car insurance comparison sites which make the job of insurance hunting straight forward.

Don’t under estimate car insurance brokers as well. These guys are looking for the best quote for people every day. They make a living out of saving people money and they will know the quirks of different insurance underwriting through their vast experience. Some times there are things that an online flow chart just doesn’t cover!

My insurance was checked when I was pulled over in Romania (along with my Romanian Road tax and as I mentioned in another article, some countries like Serbia require and insurance green card so check the rule on each country you plan to drive in.

It’s worth hunting around for car insurance and don’t feel obliged just because someone has spent 10 minutes on the phone to you. Haggle as much as possible. The worst that can happen is they don’t give you any money off.
